growth

as we

reach the end of a major
epoch in our lives, it is only
natural that we pause to reflect
on what has been and to conjecture
on what might be. in the perhaps vain
hope that what we have done will be of
interest to others and significant to us,
we unfold on the following pages in word and
picture a brief narrative of the many dreams,
experiences, and accomplishments of all of us.
these vignettes from our past have been amassed
in this yearbook — or more properly, our lifebook —
in a format patterned after the chronology of the
ives concerned, thus you'll see that we have
started at our beginnings and progressed through
the book narratively until today, the pattern may
be confusing and involved — but so is life, and
the mirror must reflect the image, this, then, is
our story; and yet it is also the story of many
hundreds of parents, teachers, and friends to
whom we have dedicated these annals, for they
have played an integral role in developing the
chronicle about to be unfolded, if but one of
those who have devoted their lives to us
"s able to share a smile, recall a fond
memory, or relive a dream as they amble
down memory's bypaths with us, as we
review the story they have written,
we will know the lives were
worth the living and the
story, the relating.

in appreciation

as we retrace the many and varied paths that have led us to the threshold
of maturity, we are proud to have with us as our model, a man who has
helped many hundreds before us over the same paths, around the same pit-
falls, while we gratefully acknowledge in these pages the wisdom and devo-
tion of the many parents and teachers without whose counsel and direction
none of what we have achieved would have been, we are particularly in-
debted to one man who has served us and our parents before us, selflessly
and untiringly, it is our sincere prayer that god will bless forty more classes
with his unfailing leadership and that the man to whom we humbly dedicate
our class, our graduation, and our yearbook will remember the class of 1961
as fondly as we will remember him — thomas a. lyons.

us

when we were merely bouncin babes and everything was new
we thought the world was full of such delightful things to do
from kicking up a ruckus just to make a little noise
to holding summit meetings with other girls and boys

we'd talk about the problems that one has when one is young
the meetings were top secret so we spoke our secret tongue
but we were happy on the whole for life had much to give
we hadn't learned of bombs and war we weren't afraid to live

oh what a lovely time we had from ages one through five
playing games the whole day long twas great to be alive
but nothing lasts forever such is life's established rule
when we were six we started off to elementary school

school was an experience that we liked pretty well
learning how to read and write and being taught to spell
we remember all our friends the boys and girls we met
when we got a" in rithmetic they called us teacher's pet

at last we came to weymouth high and found a rugged pace
the hours spent in study with a book before our face

twas english art and algebra just every sort of class

with homework piled on homework till we thought we'd never pass

a good administration means a pod

the ideal administration is human enough to gain the
friendship of the students and authoritative enough to com-
mand their respect, the administration here at weymouth
high completely fills this description, the great number of
students who have had the opportunity to meet our principal,
mr. whittle, know him to be a very congenial person, and one
whom students automatically respect, under mr. whittle's
leadership the administration of weymouth high has achieved
a level of quality of which all of us may well be proud.

mr. parker, principal w.v.s.; mr. lyons and mr. kelly, assist-
ant principals.

many an hour in language lab we've all spent in parlay-ing

into a small black mike and wondering just what we're saying

in junior year came chemistry with lab work once a week

the odors we concocted could have made the whole school reek

there's physics for the seniors and languages for all

and headaches for the teachers with their backs against the wall

"quelle patience la professeur a!"

madeline I. cote, french: university of michigan, bridgewater
state teachers college, boston university; graduation dance.

though we may have regretted it often, many of us elected
the college course at w.h.s.; fortunately, we persevered and
will soon be put to the test as we head for campuses all over
the country, as sophomores, most of us followed the stand-
ard program based on english, geometry, french, and latin,
but then elected courses to fit our future plans.

some took the advanced mathematics program, studying
frantically both trig and second-year algebra in our junior
year to prepare for the rigors of college calculus, others
went on to advanced studies in art and design or languages,
all of us took the sciences in stride, puzzling over ripple
tanks and retorts with equal fervor, between research papers
and reading requirements in english courses, we established
a lasting familiarity with most of the libraries in the area and,
hopefully, improved our facility with the mother tongue, his-
tory classes revealed what others have done and inspired
us to look to the future, college, here we come!

fight, maroon and g old !

if you were to ask any weymouth high student what is the
best way to spend sixth period, he would probably reply,
"the football rally." on a crisp, bright day in early autumn
the student body gathered on weymouth high's amphitheater
to cheer the new football team on to victory for the coming
season, the cheerleaders, majorettes, and students combined
into one voice to send our boys off to the games with a mag-
nificent flourish, however our team fared, they would always
remember the enthusiasm with which their classmates greeted
them.

a certain set of very attractive girls from our school led
to the posting of the following sign outside the gates of
legion field:

danger! warning: any person caught watching the Wey-
mouth high drum majorettes will immediately be required to
forfeit his attention!

dressed in fancy uniforms decorated with school colors,
these high-stepping girls could be found stealing people's
attention during the half at weymouth high football games.
Led by corinne brackett and martha smith, they strutted in
formation across the gridiron, performing their intricate rou-
tines, long may they strut!

w- e-y-m -o-u - t - b

look at them marching proudly across legion field in their
bright maroon and gold uniforms! listen to them play! can't
you feel your feet tapping as their unwavering enthusiasm
spreads through the audience? music surely stirs the soul, and
as long as the band plays on, school spirit will be strong.

have you ever dreamed of appearing on "broadway" or
television, the spotlight upon you, bringing others enjoyment
as well as enjoying yourself? a good substitute for such is
being a weymouth high cheerleader as she struts across the
field in time with the band, head held high, proud to lead
the crowds in rousing cheers.

"weymouth's our alma mater!" cries dotty breen while con-
ducting these peppy gals who are shouting, "fight, team,
fight!"

dressed in our school colors, spelling out our school name,
they are always heard yelling for both football and basket-
ball teams.

let's hear a cheer from the bleachers! you can't help but
be an enthusiastic spectator, school spirit never dies! give a
cheer for weymouth!

directed by miss levangie, the girls are enrolled in the na-
tional cheerleaders' association.

"yea weymouth!"go! go! go! rang the cheers of the
thousands of enthusiasts who flocked to see the maroons
compete on the gridiron.

r ain or shine, the boys who made up the 1960 football
team endeavored to become adept in the skills of the game.

n the field, by applying the techniques taught them by
coach jack fisher, they were able to go on to victory.

t hough these boys tasted victory only once during the
season, the skills and good sportsmanship which they have
developed will be of great merit in their future lives.

c ongratulations go to brian dunbar.

1 nvincible though they were not—

v ive the 1960 football team, for they have shown per-
sistence, endurance, and a great fighting spirit, now, read
up, taking the first letter of each paragraph, and you will see
for what weymouth high's 1960 football team through their
practice and efforts have paved the way.

whether building a house, investigating a carburetor, ham-
mering a sheet of metal, setting type, or constructing an end
table, we at the vocational school have put in three years
of hard work in preparation for our chosen trades, in the
print shop we have gained valuable experience working on
publications like the campus and reflector, in the sheet metal
shops we have been prepared to enter the nation's leading
metal industries, the trend in the american furniture industry
will depend to a great extent, in the future, on those of us
who have taken the cabinet making course, those in the auto
repair shops can unfold the intricacies of an automobile in
much the same way a geometry student can rattle off the
Pythagorean theorem, in the carpentry course we have be-
come proficient in our trade by buiding a house.

through these excellent courses we are ready, willing,
and most important, able, to lead the ranks of the nation's
skilled tradesmen.

"music hath charms to soothe the savage students," and
our chorus has done just that, though their "corridor" voices
are boisterous, to say the least, once behind those auditorium
doors, with mr. jack and mr. warren at the helm, melody re-
sounds from the halls of weymouth high.

proceeds from covered-dish suppers, hot dog stands at
football games, and tag days not only attest to the versatility
of this group but also provide money for the purchase of
choir robes and music.

an international flavor is added to the group as they rep-
resent weymouth at various state-wide festivals, the new
england festival, and the all state.

they say money is the root of all evil, don't you believe it!

our student council has had a very prosperous year, one
of their most successful projects was the book fair, which of-
fered an extraordinary variety of paper-covered books to the
students and faculty, also highly successful was the salvation
army drive, in addition, the council has conducted dances,
raised money toward a scholarship fund, supported student
organizations, and promoted projects such as school sta-
tionery, lunch room supervision, and buses to away football
games, what is their aim? simply that all students feel they
have personally been a part of their activities.

slow and steady wins the race

from november to february is winter track season at
weymouth high, under the direction of coach oral page,
assistant coaches malcolm pratt and frank cavallo, and man-
ager mark dowds, the boys participate in many events; for
example, the 50-yard dash, the 300-yard dash, the running
high jump, the shot put, and the relay race.

the members graduating this year are bruce hanson,
clyde hix, and malcolm macgregor.

this year's season might have been better if it had not
been for double sessions and the lack of seniors on the team,
several juniors, however, show promise of giving weymouth
a banner season next year, these include fred lawrence, a
very good runner and excellent anchor man; chuck craig,
whose specialties are the high jump and the hurdles; and
ralph haddix and don meacham, who excel in relay racing.

faster than a speeding bullet! is it superman? no, it's the
weymouth high cross country team! there are don meacham
and charlie delorey in the lead! will they win? no, it's fred
lawrence and he's going to match randolph's course record!

the squad, consisting entirely of juniors, placed sixth in the
south shore meet and eighth in the state meet at boston,
coach oral page and assistant coaches malcolm pratt and
frank cavallo are looking forward to an even better season
with these boys next year.

remember this!

"this can't possibly be the same group that produced the
1961 campus!" the room in which the campus staff works
from September to march appears to be in a constant state of
chaos, the chattering and commotion which fills the air is
misleading, obviously not resolved with the motto "all work,
no play", the bustling staff creates an interesting and unusual
yearbook of which the entire school may be proud, the liter-
ary staff, in conjunction with the art staff, decides upon a
theme, compiles and writes all information and material, and
assembles a facsimile to a 1961 campus.

the fact that 35 or 40 completely unqualified, inexperi-
enced seniors selected by some as yet undetermined method
have converted two tons of paper, gallons of ink, trays of
type, hundreds of photographs, and thousands of words into
something seemingly resembling a yearbook is miraculous in
itself, even more miraculous is the fact that both advisers
and staff members have survived, and all our bills are paid
(we hope).

basket, basket, basket, boys!

don't judge a book by its cover, and don't judge weymouth
high's basketball team by its win-loss record, this year's team
was made up of many fine players who put a tremendous
amount of effort into their games and practices, several
games were lost by only a slim margin, and with a little luck
and fewer injuries, we could have easily compiled a five-
hundred percentage.

despite the heart-breaking season just past, weymouth's
future looks bright, coach kearns tells us there are many
players coming up from the ranks of junior high who show
great promise and the sophomores had a very successful
season this year.

dent exchange program, good government day program.

on a thursday morning in february, hundreds of english
students attentively listened to the knocking knees of the eight
finalists in the annual oratorical contest.

the contestants, who had been coached by mr. william
t. kearns, delivered essays based on some phase of the con-
stitution of the united states, despite little variation in the
quality of the speeches, the judges finally selected jane m.
belcher and jean e. swanson as the winners,.to be presented
with fifty dollar savings bonds by the weymouth american
legion posts at graduation.

"resolved that the united nations should be significantly
strengthened." with this topic, the members of the debate
club have been engaged in verbal battles with north quincy,
our lady's of newton, and archbishop williams, our arch-rival
high schools.

the club is a member of the massachusetts secondary school
debate league and has competed in state-wide debates at
dark university and stonehill college.

a special trip to united nations headquarters in new york
helped the club members gain additional information con-
cerning their topic.

the club also sponsored a mock election in november with
the result that students at weymouth high showed a good indi-
cation of national trends.

key to the future

we have a "key" that will open any door! the qualities of
leadership and service are the chief compounds of the "key"
that will stand the boys in good stead as future members of
their community.

the key club sponsors car washes, "slave days, "and dances
to raise money for the scholarship which they award, their
attendance at kiwanis club meetings and key club conventions
provides an opportunity to become acquainted with a wide
variety of vocations and to know better the future citizens with
whom they will be working and living.

the prospect of teaching seems much more real when you're
actually conducting a reading group or leading a sixth grade
geography class.

the girls of the future teachers of america have the oppor-
tunity to do just that in their observing program, when in the
spring they spend a day at a local elementary or junior
high school.

many stimulating speakers have visited the regular meet-
ings, and trips to harvard and bridgewater state college have
highlighted the year.

keep pr eye on the ball!

the weymouth high school golf team teed off from the
first tee at the south shore country club in hingham. "fore!"
came the cry and "splash!" into the pond went the ball,
what a favorable beginning for one of weymouth high school's
newest sports! fortunately, however, interest in this sport was
by no means as dampened as the aforesaid golf ball, and
the boys looked forward to a great sprina season.

the team did very well in the 1960 season, which was
their first, defeating cohasset and tying two other matches,
through graduation the team has lost such good members as
ed corrigan, john nichols, and don oppenheim; but with such
outstanding players as jim greenhalgh, al ingham, and bill
nealan and the addition of some new members, the golf
team, coached by mr. fisher, enjoyed another successful
season.

from their visored caps to their spiked shoes, weymouth
high's baseball players have proven themselves every inch
an asset to their school, thanks to coach leo hayes, the boys
have developed a well co-ordinated, aggressive team, a
worthy opponent for any adversary.

brian dunbar, as expected, was one of weymouth's stars,
but the whole team also has a right to be proud of itself.

so we've finished high school and it's graduation day
the sunshine sends its promise that 'twill light the future way
we're fitted out with dignity in weymouth cap and gown
that tasselled hat means more to us than any royal crown
our nerves grow tense we eagerly await our moment's fame
then proudly we step forward as the speaker calls our name

the trail's end still lies ahead but briefly we can rest

to count our hopes and memories we wonder which are best

poem by beverly alien '61

dear lord,

as we humbly stand before thee, dressed in our caps and gowns, we look back with gratitude
and forward with much expectation.

upon this day, we turn toward fhee for guidance so that we shall not go astray in the particular
path each will take.

let us be ever mindful of our greatest inheritance, freedom, and hold it up as a beacon to the
troubled peoples of the world, to instill in them the hope and faith that someday they too will enjoy this,
the greatest blessing of all.

within these ivy-covered walls of weymouth high school beats the heartthrob of america's tomor-
row, make us worthy of this great land, father! and, as the ivy clings to the staunch brick walls, let us
so cling to the ideals this institution has bestowed upon us.

we cannot stop the passing of time, nor can we help losing some contact with the steadfast friends
we have made here; but with thy grace, we shall always cherish the many happy hours shared with the
teachers, who, with thy help, molded our early years and gave us the means of acquiring and diffusing
useful knowledge.

as our cross of gray boldly weathers stormy and sunny days, give us the strength to face each
day with the trials and joys which come, as we go from here today, stay by our side, guide us through to
the fulfillment of our goals, and help us become the citizens this school prepared us to be.

amen

farewell

we have reached the end of our journey through the
past, and it is time to look to the future, to that future we
commend the sophomores and juniors who have shared
this year with us.

with sincere gratitude we acknowledge the wonderful
spirit and enthusiasm evident among the undergraduates,
this year their willingness to assist in all our class endeavors
from yearbook to class play has won them school-wide
applause.

when each pupil in a homeroom is willing to do his part
for the senior class by purchasing a campus , we have no
cause for concern about their future as a class, room 304
did just that! to such spirit as this we bequeath the benefit
of all our errors, the satisfaction of projects well done, and
sincere faith in their destiny as seniors, knowing full well
that they are qualified to carry out the traditions of devotion
and accomplishment synonymous with weymouth high, ave
atque vale!
